EV Affordability Starts With You, GM
Once the leader, GM has abandoned the affordable EV market.
In order for everyone to participate in the EV transition, America needs affordable EV options. As Electric Vehicle advocates we call on General Motors to stand by its slogan of making “EVs for Everyone” and keep its promise that the forthcoming electric Equinox will be priced “around $30,000.”
General Motors has branded itself as an electric vehicle leader but has failed to meaningfully deliver on early EV promises. It continuously pushes back production deadlines and favors high-priced luxury EVs over ones most families can afford. Right now, GM sells just one all-electric vehicle at a price point below $56,000 - the Chevy Bolt. However, the company has temporarily discontinued the Bolt with no timeline for when the newly announced Ultium-powered version will be available.
GM’s latest all-electric option to roll off the assembly line, the Chevy Blazer EV, was originally supposed to have a entry-level trim option priced around $44,000, but the team scrapped it and left only the more expensive options. If GM is going to lead America in the EV transition, that cannot happen to the Equinox.
Right now, about four-in-ten Americans say they are ready to go electric – but more than half of potential EV customers say they would not spend over $50,000 on an all-electric car. GM knows how important affordability is to the consumer – sales of the Bolt are setting records this year. The Equinox EV is the answer for the millions of American drivers who want to go electric but need something their families can afford.
